*IMPORTANT NOTE TO THE FAMILIES OF DECEASED VETERANS and/or REQUESTORS:

    Did You Know?

It is the right of every deceased Veteran to have a Military honors team attend the graveside service, to present the Flag at no charge to the family. Our volunteers are auditioned, and can perform Taps as a free service. Military Funeral Honors Teams are sent out at the expense of the US Government. Further, it is your right to insist that any funeral director request a live bugler who can actually sound Taps on a horn, as opposed to a recorded version. Please feel free to use our "state of the art" request system(click on the Request a Bugler Icon).
NOTE: Your funeral director may inform you that the military is sending a "live" bugler; you may want to ask him or her if that person can actually play the bugle, or "is it someone holding a horn with an electronic device inserted into the bell?" You have the right to insist on the "real deal", to include asking for us by name...Bugles Across America!

    About Us

Bugles Across America, NFP was founded in 2000 by Tom Day, when Congress passed legislation stating that Veterans have a right to at least two uniformed military people to fold the flag and play Taps on a CD player. Bugles Across America was founded to take this a step further.  In recognition of the service these Veterans have provided to their country, we felt that they each deserve a live rendition of Taps played by a live bugler. To this end, we are actively seeking capable volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families.

Bugles Across America now has over 7500 bugler volunteers located in all 50 states and growing number overseas. Since the Department of Veterans Affairs is expecting more than 1/2 million veterans to pass every year for the next 7 years, Bugles Across America is ALWAYS recruiting new volunteers.

Bugler Volunteers can be male or female. They can play a traditional bugle with no valves, or they can perform the ceremony on a Trumpet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, or a 1, 2 or 3 valved bugle. The bugler can be of any age as long as they can play the 24 notes of Taps with an ease and style that will do honor to both the Veterans, their families, and the burial detail performing the service. There are no fees or dues to participate as a volunteer, although there are certain directives that must be followed.

Our Founder and President Tom Day can be reached by email, or by using the contact information in the left sidebar on this page.

What to Expect  After Requesting One of Our Buglers

When one of our bugler volunteers accepts a request to perform Taps for your service, you should receive communication from him or her, informing you of intent to serve your request.

    • The bugler will arrive early at the gravesite, or requested location, make contact with the Military Honors Team, and then stand ready to sound Taps
    • Our volunteers are required to look sharp, whether in civilian attire, an Official Bugles Across America Uniform, or if a Veteran, he or she may be dressed in either a Class A or Dress level(example, Dress Blues) uniform of the branch they served in. Some of our members are in Honor Guards, and may be attired in that respective uniform.
    • All BAA buglers are required to pass an audition, demonstrating their skill level to sound Taps properly.

Please refer to our Directives for Buglers for more details.

Mission Statement...from Tom Day, Our Founder

BAA was born in 2000 as a result of the Law being passed, stating that Every Qualified Veteran can have Military Funeral Honors. In short, at least two people to fold and present the flag and provide live Taps. With this in mind, Bugles Across America, a not for profit, was started. Government nfp forms were filed and we received an official IRS 501c3 number. This has been reviewed and renewed.

BAA files a tax return with the IRS and the Atty.General of the State of Illinois. All returns are viewable at GuideStar During the course of the last twelve years, we have acquired both a TRADEMARK and COPYRIGHT for our name and logo. BAA also owns the right to all internet names and suffixes.
Bugles Across America nfp does not charge members to join nor does it collect yearly dues. We ask all voluteer members to audition before being placed on the active bugler list so that we know every Veterans Family will receive the best sounding of Taps possible.

Our Membership consists of men and women of all ages, races, and creeds; Veterans and Patriots alike.

We operate and pay for our web site, however, the Bugler Service is Free to all that request it. We are an all Volunteer Program and receive NO government financial help. In some cases, the Military does pay a bugler the $50 stipend, but this is very rare. Those few players who do collect any honorariums are responsible for their own tax reporting.

How have we paid for the over 700 horns and some uniforms we have given away to our members?Over the 12 year period we have had a few foundations donate but they have been reduced as well. Most of operating funds come from the American People via donations. For This We thank YOU every day.

Our members supply their own playing instrument and are responsible for appearing early for each event and dressed correctly. Over the years, we have established member Directives for Buglers which we expect to be followed, or dismissal will take place. All members are responsible for their transport to and from events and must have their own insurance coverage to cover all possible emergencies and problems.

Any member who is found to have any type of criminal record will be dismissed and removed from

    the roster.

We thank you for reading our Mission Statement and remind you that for the last 12 years, we at BAA have been given credit for over 200,000 Funeral Missions and have corporately given over a Million hours of Volunteer time To our Veterans and their Families.

Again We Thank You for Your Support. Tom Day Founder and Bugler
