Bugles Across America
By JDay on 1/29/2011 11:28 PM

We know many of you volunteer so much of your valuable time towards covering events for Bugles Across America, but we received some stats on one bugler in particular that we wanted to share.

In 2010 alone, Gerry Schuck from Virginia has covered an impressive 89 funerals/events/memorial services and driving a total of 3,700 miles for Bugles Across America.

Thank you Gerry for your selfless dedication.

Tom, good morning.  You are an amazing man.  We got plenty of snow yesterday. 18 inches!  My back was killin’ me!

The UPS driver pulls up with a box and says, “I have a box for Bob.”  Tom, I was like Ralph from A Christmas Story when he opened and received his BB gun.  I was in shock.  That was one of the nicest things that anyone has ever done for me. God bless you.  It’s beautiful.  I will cherish this horn and honor you, your men and all the great veterans of this country.

Tom, I am so driven and compassionate about our freedoms and they are not free.  My grandfather’s brother was killed in WWI in France and was 18 years old.  I think of him, I think of all the men who sacrificed for each one of us and that is why I believe, like you, that every day is Memorial Day.  To honor those men at the ceremony in every season and in all weather conditions, they deserve it.

The DVD was also wonderful. You are a true American patriot and although I have never been in the service, I would have made...

Why do we volunteer?: A Message from Utah’s State Director, Brent Christensen.

January 24th, 2011

I had coffee this morning with another Marine.  I out posted from M.C.R.D. in 1962 and my coffee buddy out posted in 1973.

Another Marine (Chosin) entered the shop and the conversation inadvertently got around to my volunteering to play TAPS at military funerals.  All of us understood my duty and there it stayed.

There was no talk of a uniform to purchase, a bugle or even traveling to distant communities to play just twenty-four notes . . . then after offering condolences, retuning home.

At home, as I got out of my car, my next-door neighbor, also a Marine (Chosin), asked me if I had heard anything yet?  I didn’t know what he was talking about.  Apparently, my neighbor Jim has written a letter to Major General Ronald L. Bailey (Commanding General/ MCRD/Western Recruiting Region) with a favor to ask.

Jim served as the Executive Officer of the California Legislative Marines...

Texas Prepares For It’s 2nd Annual BAA Meeting For Texas Buglers With Excited Enthusiasm!

Steve Kalowski, The State Director for Texas, has been busy with planning and preparing for the Second Annual Texas BAA meeting on Saturday, January 29th, 2011.

He has prepared 6 shadow boxes and put all 4 medals in each one, with the bugler hall of fame patch in the middle. He will present these to the 6 players who go way above and beyond. These will be the first 6 in the hall of fame in Texas.

He has 2 awards going to 2 different players for outstanding achievement, and those buglers will be put into the hall of fame as well.

Steve will give an award for last minute notice Ex: Accepting and calling the requestor 45 minutes before the service was to start and successfully fulfilling the request.  This bugler will be given a gas card.

He will have a ticket drawing for a gas card (maybe 2) and plastic mouthpiece (s)

Challenge coins will be given to select buglers as well.

Hello members!

We just wanted to let you know of something that’s going on that is pretty neat.

Tom Day donated a bugle to Russia High School’s Bugle Society to help students learn to play Taps.  The music director there has just started the bugle program with this attached announcement.  They hope to award bugles to their best buglers on Veterans Day and have them sign up with Buglers Across America.

Russia High School Bugle Society:

Lessons on the Bugle will start after HS solo and ensemble.  After students learn the calls on their trumpet/cornet, they will have a chance to try-out the Bugle.  Three students will be selected to take on this honor after try-outs.  Students will then be on a list to call for funerals and other military events.  The Bugle will be kept here at school.  A separate mouthpiece will be given to each student who is chosen. Please keep in mind that this may also require assistance during Memorial Day and other military/American holidays.  You will be asked...
