Dear Tom... I am calling you Tom this year because, though we have never met, You have supported our son, Jesse, for two summers of marching drum corps  and we are beginning to feel like you are a part of our family! Though you have never seen him or spoken to him... it is amazing how generous you are to young people on their word alone... Jesse 'made' the  Cavaliers this year and was over the moon with joy. It has been his dream for so long. We are proud of him. He is a really neat young man. Next fall he will be Center on the Snare line for the Marching Illini. He participated in Gateway Indoor Percussion this winter and now spring. He is a Music Education Student at University of Illinois and cannot wait to teach! He tutors one High School Student for snare drum at the college. He is carrying a 17 credit schedule for his Education Degree as a second semester Sophomore. He keeps track of his Green Thunder Percussion Buddies and their great successes this year. He has so many friends and acquaintances...

We asked our IT folks to set up a system of automatic notice to alert State Directors of any new registration within their state.  This is very handy and does away with the requirement to make daily check of one’s Non-bugler List to see if there have been any new additions.  This alert system has been operating efficiently for several weeks now.

In order to accomplish notification to the right people, we needed to identify who was watching which state(s).  There were good reasons for not just taking the list of State Directors that has been published and sending out the notices in accordance with that list.  First of all, some states still do not have an active State Director, and this has required a few people to monitor and manage more than one state.  On the other hand, some states have designated one or two individuals as responsible for managing the roster; these are the folks then that need to be alerted to a new registration.  Okay, then, we tell the system who is watching a particular state by...

Alabama State Director, Gene Ramsay, discusses the discovery of a fascinating and dedicated bugler from days past:

At the Trumpet Festival of the Southeast, I ran into some great musicians and some people with some great stories about Taps, and/or loved ones who had military honors, etc.

One person I ran into was the Brass Product Specialist of Buffet Brass, Tim Ornato.  As we talked about BAA, his mind went straight to his dad, Michael Ornato.  Attached are two photos he sent my way of his dad in uniform and as a bugler.  He also sent me a little back-story of the unique position his dad was asked to be a part of at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

“It was nice speaking to you today.  My father was selected and attached to the honor guard during the years 1953-1955, which was his duty during the Korean War.  I don't actually know if there are other surviving buglers that were also attached to the guard like he was, so I am told his post was unique.  I do know that the duty went to the regular...

I just want to thank you all at BAA.  My father would be proud.  Frank Cabral played for my father and did a fabulous job.  I just wish I could have thanked him in person.  All at the service were very pleased with the military honors and I cannot say enough about Mr. Cabral.  Thank you all again very much.  You have been a bright light in a very dark time for my family.

Attention All State and Area Directors.  The attached story tells you that many parts of the Army do want to work with BAA. I would like you all to look this over for a possible National BAA convention in 2013 site. Our last convention was at least Five years ago and we had almost 70 people attend. Please research this site and see if you feel it would the place for our next get together. If you are involved with any of the units mentioned please let them know as well. Sincerely Tom Day Founder Subject: U.S. ARMY CADET CORPS Mr. Day: It was a pleasure to chat with you regarding the U.S. Army Cadet Corps (USAC).  I'm especially impressed with your efforts and success relative to Bugles Across America.   As discussed, USAC is a community-based, Army-centric, Cadet program similar to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) and Young Marines (YM).    We're doing well and growing monthly.  As you know, we purchased the campus of the former Millersburg Military Institute, in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in September 2008.  ...

I am so glad to see someone making the effort to give soldiers what they deserve.  I am a music teacher and when my grandfather passed away in 2008, I was so disappointed to find that the "buglers" provided for his military funeral weren't really playing.  I am so pleased to see that someone is trying to change that and is making real buglers/trumpeters available to as many funerals as possible.  Thank you so much and keep up the good work.  I hope to help in fulfilling your mission soon!

The electronic age has arrived for Drum Corps World newspaper!  After 39 years as a print publication, the Madison, WI-based newspaper will begin a new era on May 2. The decision was not an easy one according to Publisher Steve Vickers.  “I’ve looked into transitioning over the years, but it wasn’t viable until recently.  It has become increasingly difficult recently, given postage, printing and related costs continuing to escalate. “We’ll release our brand-new, on-line magazine in six weeks and it will have all the same features we’ve offered in the past, plus much more.  And no longer will we be charging for a subscription,” Vickers explained.  Readers can have it delivered through their computer, phone or tablet. The final printed edition, mailed to subscribers on March 17, details the process Vickers went through to make the change.  Revenue from current subscribers has made this possible, along with encouraging support from advertisers. Through an agreement with High Velocity Media, monthly issues...
